A family wine estate in Corno di Rosazzo, founded by Leonardo Specogna in 1963 within the Collio subregion of Friuli. The region was home to vineyards since the Roman era and eventually the farm evolved to center on quality wine production after Collio was one of the first wine regions to receive DOC status in 1968. Third generation Cristian & Michele Specogna are now at focus, and were ranked in the Top 50 best young winemakers in the world list by Food & Drink Magazine in 2021.
Specogna makes Pinot Grigio in its ancient Ramato style, involving skin contact maceration to give it a copper color. Unlike their Riserva version of the grape, this wine has a more gentle pale pink color due to only 48 hours of maceration in low temperature. 20% of the wine was even aged in oak barrels. Characterized with a full body, slight tannin from the skins, and refreshing acidity. Primary flavors include tree fruits, such as pear and apple, with secondary citrus flavors.
A delightful play on a classic international variety, this Sauvignon is packed with intense aromas and notes of tropical fruit as a result of the cool Colli Orientali climate. Best described as crisp and well balanced, with a long finish and pleasant aftertaste. Enhanced from 10% of the must being aged in oak barrels with battonage. Flavor profile includes grapefruit, lemon zest, tomato leaf and pineapple.
Pignolo is a native red grape variety found only in the Friuli region, where it nearly suffered extinction due to low yields mixed with the difficulty of its cultivation (hence the name which translates to "Fussy"). However, when done right, it produces a bold red wine with rich tannins and an addicting bitterness. Specogna Pignolo is exactly that, with perfumes of plum, cocoa, coffee & spices as well as tastes of red fruit, tannin, and balanced acidity that pairs well with red meats.
Specogna Picolit, often called the "Wine of Friendship" is a deep gold, intense dessert wine with high alcohol (500 ml bottle). Picolit is very rare due to its small grapes and bunches, making it an exclusive wine for celebrations as it was historically used to serve the palates of Friuli Princes and Popes. The flavor profile includes delicious sweet notes of marmalade, dried apricot, honey, banana and almond paste.
