Found in the foothills of the Valpolicella wine region in Veneto, the certified sustainable farm has been in the area since 1630 and is among the oldest and most well-known producers of Amarone in all of Italy. Fourth generation winemaker Riccardo Tedeschi takes the spotlight for the consistency Tedeschi produces year after year.
Monte Olmi is the name of Tedeschi's 20 year old Pedemonte di Valpolicella vineyard in the heart of the Classico region, and is the symbol of the estate and territory. Amarone made from the dried grapes in Monte Olmi is one of the first single-vineyard wines of the region and the result is a 5 year aged (Riserva) bold, full-bodied wine, with long-lasting & persistent flavor. A premium wine with aromas of blackberries, spice and Slavonian oak, medium tannins and a fine finish.
Marne means "marl" in Italian and 180 is the degrees of exposure of Tedeschi vineyards, from south-west to south-east. Marne 180 is a younger Amarone aged only for 2.5 years in Slavonian oak and 6 months in the bottle. While aged less than its Monte Olmi counterpart, it is still an excellent fine wine with velvety character and huge potential for further aging. Marne 180 has vanilla & sweet black fruit aromas with a raisin and cherry taste meant for pairing with red meats and aged cheeses.
The appasimento method for producing Valpolicella Ripasso wines dates back to the mezzadria era of Italy where food was scarce and no crop product would go to waste. The villagers of Pedemonte considered San Rocco (Saint Roch) to be a protector who watched over every year's harvest. This wine is also nicknamed "Baby Amarone" for its added structure and flavor gained from the passing over of Amarone pomace to refine a classic Valpolicella blend.
Named after Tedeschi ancestor, Niccolo, the Capitel Nicalo is a wine made from the usual Valpolicella grapes harvested in the Moraine Hills of the Superiore region. The grapes are partially dried to lose between 8-10% of water weight, enriching the sugar content and dry extract to leave behind a fruity, lively acidic, well balanced wine meant to be enjoyed with most meals.
The Lucchine is a Valpolicella wine made from grapes of the Classico region, rather than the Superiore. This is Tedeschi's entry level wine meant to be "ready-to-go" and enjoyed any day. The abundance of freshness, fruity, and mild spicy flavors are the result of the youngness of the wine and it pairs excellently well with pasta, white meats, pizzas and light meals in general.
Aside from being internationally renowned for their Valpolicella based wines, the Tedeschi winery also has an old vineyard site in the Soave Classico wine making region out of the commune of Monteforte d'Alpone. Garganega is harvested here to make their only white wine, Capitel Tenda Soave, which has a velvety, dry fruit flavor and an almond- scented nose.
